Piriformis Syndrome is a condition that occurs when the piriformis, a muscle located deep within the buttocks regions.. (behind the gluteus maximus)..., irritates the sciatic nerve, a large nerve starting in the lower back that runs to the thigh, leg, and foot. When one suffers from Piriformis syndrome, they generally experience pain, numbness, or tingling originating in the buttock that frequently radiates to the thigh and leg. In severe cases weakness in the thigh and leg can also be reported
Right.., Symptoms can be very similar because they are very near to each other.., but mark my words, strictly speaking, they're very different. Since it's radiculopathy it is often secondary to compression or inflammation of a spinal nerve. When the pain radiates down the back of the leg to the calf or foot, it would in lay terms be described as sciatica.
Bit piriformis muscle irritating the sciatic nerve give rise to symptoms which are similar to sciatica and its not necessary that sciatica occurs only because ofbits irritation near lumbar spine ...it can also occur due to its irritation in its long course.. whether near spine or buttock or back thigh
