Common side effects include vomiting, black stools, diarrhea, and constipation. The more serious side effect, pneumonitis, may result ifaspirated into the lungs. Use inpregnancy and breastfeeding is safe.Activated charcoal works by adsorbing the toxin.

It is used as antidote for poisoning it creates layer in the stomach so that the absorption of poison should be decreased..
