‘Mirena baby’ photographed clutching his mother’s IUD after birth in his tiny hand!! 👶🏼 What could be a bigger case of irony than this? This photo of a baby holding a Mirena IUD had the internet in awe. The 34-year-old from Alabama discovered she was pregnant despite being fitted with a birth control intrauterine device (IUD — Mirena) implant four months earlier, which the manufacturer boasts of being 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. But life has a way of overcoming even the biggest odds. Baby Dexter was born via scheduled C-section weighing 4.1kg, and a photo was captured to announce the tot’s arrival into the world, along with a caption that read, “Mirena fail!” It’s when doctors were delivering the baby by C-section that they found the IUD implant behind the mom’s placenta. A nurse then put the IUD into the newborn baby’s hand and snapped a picture. According to the manufacturer, the Mirena IUD makes a woman’s body hostile to new life in three ways: It thickens the woman’s cervical mucus to prevent sperm from traveling to an egg; it prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg; and if a sperm and egg do unite, the IUD thins the lining of the uterus, making it impossible for the newly conceived human being (embryo) to implant on the uterine wall. This woman is very lucky that when the placenta grew over the IUD it did not disrupt the blood flow to the placenta. Unsurprisingly, some viewers interpreted the image to mean the baby was delivered holding the IUD in his hand, delighting in the idea that he had vanquished it and was clutching it triumphantly in the womb. However, the baby’s wasn’t born holding the IUD in his hand. Rather, the doctors had known the IUD had remained in the uterus throughout pregnancy but were unable to locate it. After it was found and removed during c-section, it was “placed in the hand of her son as a sort of tongue-in-cheek nod to conceiving while having an IUD in”.
