Understanding Embryology and re-shaping the lips

How an understanding of Embryology helps to reshape lips for beautiful, natural looking results. On the top row is the developing embryo. Lip development begins at gestational week 4 with the appearance of the frontonasal prominence (in brown), and the maxillary and mandibular prominences (in purple and dark green respectively). A series of steps involving extension and fusion of the prominences leads to formation of the external face, including the lips. Note how the upper lip relates more to the maxilla and nose, but the lower lip relates more to the mandible and chin. Extending lines (H-lines in light green) from the base of the nose to the lower border of the mandible can help to decide the optimal position of the tubercles and the curvature of the lower lip to that of the mandible (H-curves in dark green). By understanding how the lips are formed during development, the practitioner is able to optimise placement of filler for the most beautiful, natural looking results.
