Occipital nerve stimulation is a form of neuromodulation therapy aimed for treatment of cranio-facial syndromes and headaches refractory to conservative method. A device which consists of electrodes and a pulse generator is implanted in a patient. The electrical leads are fixed in the subcutaneous tissue that is innervated by greater or lesser occipital nerve while the pulse generator is implanted into subcutaneous space in the back of the head, abdomen or chest. A trial is performed under sedation prior to permanent implantation in which the electric leads are placed under the skin and the leads are connected to an external battery. The criteria for permanent implantation is significant improvement in pain and quality of life of the patient.
