Surgery that requires general anesthesia restricts food intake 6 hours before the surgery. Under general anesthesia, the entire body becomes numb and does not feel anything. This means all reflexes stop. In case of food present in stomach, the patient can vomit during the surgery or the patient can aspire the vomitus causing respiratory complications.
