CMV can be detected in the blood of an adult patient. The blood is taken for culture, serologic tests, polymerase chain reaction, antigen assays, and cytopathology. If CMV is suspected in pregnant women, amniocentesis is performed to test the amniotic fluid. Urine or saliva of a newborn is taken to detect the presence of CMV. An eye test is done to check for inflammation in the retina. A biopsy of the lung, esophagus, or intestine can also be performed. Lastly, a CT scan is performed to detect changes in the brain or lungs
