Glycemic Index (GI) is a system for carbohydrate-containing foods. This system assigns a number out of 100 to such foods indicating their potential to increase blood sugar. Lentils, kidney beans, fruits, green vegetables, chickpeas and bran breakfast cereals, pasta, low-fat dairy products have low GI. Bananas, raisins, sweet corn, raw pineapple, oat breakfast cereals, rye bread, oat bran bread and multigrain bread have medium GI. Potatoes, white bread and white rice have high GI.
