The common causes of vertebral compression fracture include: • Osteoporosis- most common cause of fracture. The disease results in bone becoming weaker that is more susceptible to fracture. It is more common in women, especially after menopause than men • Trauma to the spine from car accidents or sports injury • Tumors in the spine such as multiple myeloma, hemangioma and metastases Patients with compression fractures present with sudden onset of back pain that may arise from normal activity. Most patients find it difficult to sit or sleep comfortably due to pain.
