Second Impact Syndrome

Second impact syndrome [SIS] refers to second concussion following primary brain injury. Getting a concussion after primary brain injury is fatal as it can cause death within 2-5 minutes. The cause of death is inability of the brain to autoregulate condition following the second injury. Hence, rapid edema ensues and death occurs. This is the reason why players after getting a concussion are not allowed to return to the field since second injury would cause rapid death.
