Spina Bifida - A Neural Tube Defect

Spina Bifida - A Neural Tube Defect

Spina bifida is a neural tube defect. It is characterized by herniation of spinal cord along with meninges or herniation of meninges only. Protrusion of spinal cord and meninges is referred to as myelomeningocele. Herniation of meninges is referred to as meningocele. Most common complication of spina bifida is hydrocephalus. Supplementation with folic acid before conception and antenatally significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects.
