Aminotransferase Enzymes Aminotransferases, also known as transaminases, is a group of enzymes actively involved in interconverison of amino acids into oxoacids. The two most important aminotransferases are alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) or serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) or serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT). Normal level of AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) is about 5 to 40 units per liter of serum and 7 to 56 units per liter of serum.
