Cretinism: A Manifestation of Hypothyroidism in Childhood

Cretinism is a manifestation of thyroid hormone deficiency in childhood. One of the most common causes of cretinism is severe maternal deficiency of iodine during pregnancy. Cretinism can affected almost all body functions and severely impacts the growth and development. Most notable problems in children are stunted growth, mental retardation, coarse facies, and enlarged tongue. Mental retardation caused by cretinism is totally reversible provided the condition is diagnosed early and adequate treatment is given. Cretinism is an extremely rare condition.
