GANGRENOUS BOWEL
Gangrenous bowel, also known as ischemic bowel or bowel gangrene, is a serious medical condition that occurs when a section of the intestine (bowel) doesn't receive enough blood supply, leading to tissue death and potentially life-threatening complications. The inadequate blood flow can be caused by various factors, including a blocked blood vessel, twisted intestine (volvulus), blood clot, or other vascular issues. When blood flow to a portion of the bowel is compromised, the affected tissue starts to die due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. This can lead to the release of toxins into the bloodstream and can cause severe pain, fever, and other symptoms. If left untreated, gangrenous bowel can result in the rupture of the intestine, leading to severe infection (peritonitis) and even death. The treatment for gangrenous bowel typically involves surgical intervention to remove the dead tissue and restore blood flow to the affected area. In some cases, a section of the intestine may need to be removed, and the healthy ends of the intestine may be surgically reconnected (anastomosis). In more severe cases, a temporary colostomy or ileostomy might be created to allow the intestine to heal before the reconnection surgery is performed.
