The Babinski reflex (or sign), which is assessed during neurological examination, can be tested by using a finger or blunt object to stroke the sole of the foot along the lateral side, from the heel to the toes. Dorsiflexion of the big toe and plantar flexion and spreading of the small toes indicate a positive Babinski sign. This sign is positive in infants until 12–24 months of age. Afterwards, a positive Babinski sign may indicate damage to the corticospinal tract.
