This is a chromosome, a chromosome contains the genetic material. They are composed of DNA and Proteins. Every time a cell divides the chromosome has to be replicated! Both cells end up with the same genetic material. On the end of each chromosome is a long protective DNA sequence that is known as the TELOMERE. Each time the cell divides it has to cut a tiny portion of the telomere off, so as we age our telomeres get shorter and shorter. This cutting of the telomere eventually gets to a point where they are less protective and genes start to get impacted and this can start causing diseases. Interesting additions:1. Some cancers can activate genes that stop their telomeres from shortening, thus creating immortalized cell lines. 2. If you were to look at the telomeres on a human, you could predict their age extremely well, based on their telomeres length!
