Other than surgery, what treatment would you consider for local colorectal cancer?
Colon cancers are the cancers arising from epithelium of the large bowel. It is divided into 2 types including adenocarcinoma (common) and squamous carcinoma. The management of the condition involves pharmacological as well as surgical. pharmacological management firstly involves symptom relief, such as analgesics, iron supplementation, blood transfusion, antibiotics or parenteral nutrition. Chemotherapy is used as an adjuvant oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy for stage III cancers where lymph nodes are involved. This is done for 6 months consecutively. For example: oxaliplatin plus capecitabine combination. Other type includes neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. This is done when only locally invasive cancers or nodes. All cancers which are stage II or higher should be treated with chemotherapy post- surgery.
