What is Is sinus arrythimia, and what are the signs and diagnoses? I had a case when a patient went into sinus bradicardia 45 pbm up to 174pbm just would like more information and knowledge etc
Sinus Arrhythmia, or "regularly irregular" sinus rhythm, is a variation on sinus rhythm where the P-P interval ( the distance between consecutive P waves) varies by more than 10%.
Causes can be: Respiratory-where the P-P interval lengthens and shortens with inspiration and expiration. Non-respiratory - where the process occurs seemingly for no reason. Sometimes seen in association with Complete Heart Block.
There are typically 2 types of sinus arrhythmia. By far the most common is basically benign and known as respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Here the variation in the heart rate is related to the breathing cycle. The rate increases when the person breathes in and decreases when the person breathes out. Its what we call a physiological response and isnât considered a significant abnormality. Its much more common in children and tends to decrease with age
The other form of sinus arrhythmia is less common and known as non-respiratory sinus arrhythmia. It is more common in the elderly where it may occur in association with heart disease.
It is diagnosed using an EKG. The EKG criteria to diagnose sinus arrhythmia is a variation of the P-P interval, from one beat to the next, of at least 0.12 seconds, or 120 milliseconds.
Thank you so much for the knowledge I have gained, I had a case where a patient went trachy ( 174 bpm then bradicardia 45 bpm) but he had a echo and 7 days ecg tape but some artefacts ate stated but it's showing sinus arrhythmia or possible artial flutter ) I am only a student not a cardiologist but what does that suggest does the patient need beta blockers...
