What type of virus is human papillomavirus (HPV)?
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), with over 100 varieties, is a virus typically transmitted by contact. Sometimes, this virus does not cause any disease and many people carry it unknowingly. However, HPV causes diseases including genital herpes and cervical cancer. A common misconception about HPV is that it is transmitted sexually only. HPV transmits via vaginal, oral and anal sex but this mode is restricted to only 40 varieties. The remaining varieties do not need intercourse. They can transmit through skin-to-skin contact.
