What happens if severe dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever) is left untreated?
Dengue Shock Syndrome According to WHO classification, when a patient experiences shock after Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) that is called Dengue Shock Syndrome. The fever in this syndrome switches from typical dengue fever to severe dengue hemorrhagic fever. The signs include • Severe stomach pain • Bleeding from your gums or nose • Persistent vomiting • Bleeding under the skin, which might look like bruising • Blood in your urine, stools or vomit • Difficult or rapid breathing • Fatigue • Irritability or restlessness Other characteristics include • Rapid weak pulse i.e. < 20 mmHg • Cold clammy skin • Restlessness • Hypotension Duration of DSS Duration is usually short i.e. 12 – 24 hours. The patient died if volume replacement therapy is not recommended.
