What is the role of the T-lymphocyte cellular response in determining the clinical expression of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infectious mononucleosis (mono)?
T-lymphocytes in EBV Clinical Expression When Epstein Barr Virus invades human body, B lymphocytes initiate cellular and humoral response to the virus. Natural killer cells and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells control proliferation of B lymphocytes infected with EBV. If the T-cell response is ineffective the proliferation of B cells is quite rapid and efficient causing B-lymphocyte malignancies. When humoral response is active, diagnostic tests reveal EBC structural proteins. When T-lymphocyte cellular response is active, clinical presentation is active.
