An insult to the skin caused by hot, extreme cold, chemical or electric triggers is called a burn. It causes tissue damage. It is divided into 4 types: first degree burns (redness of the area, pain but abscess of blisters), second degree burns (partial thickness, red and mottled with presence of blisters), third degree burns (dark leathery and full thickness of skin involved) and fourth degree burns (involve muscles and bones). Sign symptoms of burns include: blisters, redness, swelling, pain or loss of feeling in the area. First degree burns should be washed in cold water and kept immersed to reduce swelling. Local products can be used such as aloe vera gel or local pain medication. Second degree burns have to be treated with antibiotics cream and proper cleaning of the wound with clean water and no alcohol. third degree burn wounds need antibiotics topically as well as intravenous and intense hydration to replace fluid loss. Once the wound is healed surgical intervention by placing skin grafts may be used.
