Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) refers to excessive production of acid and its manifestation secondary to gastrin-producing tumors. These tumors may be present in proximal part of small intestine or pancreas or both. These tumors are also called gastrinomas. Excessive gastric acid secretion results in peptic ulcers. Individuals with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 have increased risk of developing ZES. The condition is more common in men aged between 30 to 50. The symptoms of ZES are: - Nausea - Vomiting - Burning abdominal pain - Heartburn - Weight loss - Diarrhea - Black stools secondary to intestinal bleeding Proton pump inhibitors are effective in relieving the symptoms.
