Imiquimod for HPV Treatment Imiquimod does not have direct antiviral activity but it suppresses the HPV infection indirectly. It is a powerful inducer of cytokines which in-turn stimulates the synthesis and release of interferon alfa, tumor necrosis factor, interleukin (IL) – 1, IL-6, and IL-8. Imiquimod remains second choice in non-pregnant women with vulvar condyloma.
