What is the role of epinephrine in the performance of therapeutic injections for pain management?
Epinephrine causes vasoconstriction that reduces the absorption of the injection substance (such as LAs i-e local anesthetics) into systemic circulation. Hence, epinephrine prolongs the action of the drug at the site of administration and increases its efficacy.
We know epinephrine, or adrenaline, as fight-and-flight hormone. This hormone causes vasoconstriction which in turn inhibits vascular and systemic absorption of medication. This eliminates the risk of toxicity and elevates the efficacy of administered local anesthetic. Due to this effect of epinephrine, it is often combined with local anesthetics which have short duration of action.
