Name the local anesthetics that can be used in the procedure of lumbar puncture
Local anesthetics are used to provide comfort to patients during the procedure of lumbar puncture. The main anesthetic that is used is lidocaine. Lidocaine is an amide local anesthetic with 1-2% concentration. Lidocaine works by depolarizing type C sensory neurons by blocking sodium channels. Lidocaine is a rapid-acting drug but the result wears off within two hours. Another local anesthetic that can be sued is bupivacaine. Although bupivacaine has a slower effect, it is long lasting which results in pain relief for a longer time.
