Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease in which the immune system targets the myelinated axons in the central nervous system and destroys them. It causes profound physical impairment within 20–25 years in more than 30% of patients. Some classic MS signs and symptoms include • Sensory impairment • Muscle spasticity leading to cramping • Bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction • Cerebellar symptoms (Charcot triad of dysarthria (scanning speech), nystagmus, and intention tremor) • Optic neuritis • Bilateral facial weakness or trigeminal neuralgia MS is diagnosed on the basis of clinical findings as well as supporting evidence from investigations such as MRI, lumbar puncture and evoked potentials. Treatment include steroids or plasma pharesis for attacks and disease modifying agents such as ocrelizumab for slowing progression of the disease.
