What is nystagmus and how is it described?
Nystagmus is an uncontrolled condition in which eyes move in a repetitive motions, to and fro. These movements can cause imbalance and incoordination. It is felt as vertigo and people are prone to falls. These movements can be horizontal or vertical. Causes of nystagmus include: eye condition (like cataract or strabismus), strokes, multiple sclerosis, cerebellar issues, Menier's disease, head injuries, Inner ear problem, and medication induced (lithium), alcohol or drug abuse. Diagnosis is made by ear exam, neurological exam, MRI or CT scan. Treatment is cause related. Drug induced nystagmous may get better by changing medication. Eye conditions can be managed by corrective surgeries.
