How does alcoholic liver disease present?
Regular and excessive alcohol consumption can cause liver damage leading to a condition called alcoholic liver disease. It has three major presentations: 1) asymptomatic 2) fatty liver that is fat deposits in liver cell. 3) Alcoholic hepatitis: inflammation of hepatic cells. This can be mild, moderate or severe in intensity. Mild hepatitis causes abnormal LFT's only and mild flu like symptoms. Moderate cases have jaundice, hepatomegaly and CLD stigmata while severe hepatitis may present as encephalopathy, cirrhosis, DCLD and bleeding abnormalities.
Starting with an exam, you would find a swollen liver, a patient complaining of feeling sick to their stomach, yellow or jaundice eyes, loss of appetite, and/or vomiting blood.
