"A Woman Who lived Without A Cerebellum"

"A Woman Who lived Without A Cerebellum"

Perhaps, not all of us have heard about this unbelievable case of a Chinese woman who happened to live for 24 years without her knowing that there's something missing in her brain, a cerebellum. What is more shocking is that this woman only experienced minor symptoms. It is even crazier becuase this woman had been living out a pretty normal without cerebellum, the most important part of the brain. Cerebellum holds up to 50 percent of a person’s total neurons; thus, considered a "small brain". Without it? A patient would be most likely be abnormal due to the lack of the most essential cognitive functions. How come this woman could still live with a normal life with their big chunk of their brain missing? It seems like the other parts of the brain are able to compensate for these parts missing! Is it not the same when children get hemispherectomies and have a positive prognosis, live normal lives. But done to an adult, the outcome is very poor. The brain compensate very well, especially while still developing and growing. Once matured, compensation is slowed, and takes far more time

Indeed, the best candidate for that crucial procedure are children because they are resilient.

I remember one case that is related to hemispherectomy where it was preformed to reduce or eliminate the seizures of epileptic patient. Yes, it is different thing because specific brain parts corresponds to a particular cognitive function as well.
