What is the anatomy of penis?
Penis is anatomically divided into 3 parts: 1. Root 2. Body 3. Glans. The root contains three erectile tissues (two crura and bulb of the penis), and two muscles (ischiocavernosus and bulbospongiosus). The body of penis, located between the root and glans contains three cylinders of erectile tissue – two corpora cavernosa, and the corpus spongiosum. The glans contains the opening of the urethra.
The penis is composed of three parts: root( the fixed part of the penis in the superficial perineal pouch, not visible externally, made of two crura bulbs and two muscles (ischio cavernous and bulbospongiosus), body of the penis located between root and glans (comprises of three erectile columns: 2 corpora cavernosa and 1 corpus spongiosum) and the glans the distal part (an expansion of corpus spongiosum, contains urethral opening). These columns are covered by fascia, nerves, lymphatic and blood vessels. Two suspensory ligaments support the base of the penis. The penis is supplied by internal pudendal arteries, division of internal iliac artery. Deep dorsal veins drain the penis. Nerve supply of the area is by S1- S4 spinal segment.
