Purpose of Hysterectomy: Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure which involves the removal of uterus. Uterus is removed via abdominal or vaginal route. Hysterectomy treats uterine fibroids, menorrhagia, endometriosis, prolapsed and cancer. Procedure of Hysterectomy: In vaginal hysterectomy, the top of vagina is incised and special instruments are inserted. The ligaments are cut to detach the uterus. The incision is sealed with sutures. In abdominal hysterectomy, the lower abdomen is incised. With the help of instruments ligaments are cut to detach the uterus. The incision is sealed with sutures. In both types of hysterectomy, cervix may or may not be removed depending upon the consent and need of patient. Risk in Hysterectomy include - Hemorrhage - Blood clots - Injury to surrounding organs - Wound infections - Urinary incontinence - Sexual dysfunction - Bowel dysfunction Recovery of Hysterectomy For vaginal hysterectomy, recovery takes place in 3-4 weeks. For abdominal hysterectomy, recovery takes place in 6-8 weeks.
