A STD caused by infection by a bacteria called treponema pallidum. The disease develops as a genital sore. Usually after the first infection the disease becomes dormant and may later become active. Spread of the disease is through coming in contact with skin and mucous membrane of these sores and stays contagious through its primary and secondary stage. It can also spread vertically. People on risk are: having unprotected sex, having multiple partners or men having sex with men. Syphilis infection is divided into 3 stages according to its symptoms: Primary syphilis: small sores on genital where the bacteria enters, this lesion is painless so most people don’t notice it. The lesion is called a chancre. The chancre usually heals in 3 to 6 weeks. Secondary syphilis: a rash develops all over body starting at trunk, it is accompanied by sores in mouth and genital areas, fever, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. These symptoms resolve on their own as well. After this stage the disease may become latent. Tertiary stage: Complications of disease develop. Multiple systems like: cardiac, nervous system, eyes, liver, bones and joints get involved. Complication of disease include: neurosyphilis, ocular syphilis, congenital syphilis (rash on body, deafness, teeth deformity, saddle nose), still births, gammas (small bumps), aneurysms and HIV. Treatment include: IV penicillin use. Prevention steps include: monogamous relations, screening for disease and safe sex.
