Posterior Urethral Valve

Posterior Urethral Valve

Also known as congenital obstructing posterior urethral membranes, the posterior urethral valve is the most common cause of obstructive uropathy in infancy. The diagnosis is usually made antenatally. Oligohydramnios and small for gestational age provide clues for the posterior urethral valve. Vesicoamniotic shunting is done antenatally to relieve the obstruction. Transurethral ablation of the offending valve can be done after birth.
