What are some basic newborn handling and feeding care tips?
Handling a newborn can be intimidating, so here are some basic tips to keep in mind when dealing with this situation: try not to do it individually, get help from someone trustworthy, keep your hands clean when handling the baby, try to keep visitors to the minimum as babies have a weak immune system, try to avoid kissing them a lot as many infections can easily be transmitted, Always support the head and neck while moving the baby or placing them down, never shake or juggle them as it can lead to brain damage, direct maternal and paternal touch can sooth the babies and create the emotional bond, swaddling is also recommended to keep the baby calm in the first few weeks. Babies need to be changed at least 10 times a day and develop diaper rash very quickly so change diaper early, use an ointment to create barrier on the skin and keep the baby without a diaper for a part of the day. Babies should be bathed at least 2 to 3 times a week. Initially the baby should be fed on demand but should be fed after 2 to 3 hours for at least 10 to 15 minutes. New born tend to sleep 16 hours of the day, the sleep is 2 to 4 hours constantly. Babies usually don’t sleep throughout the night till at least 3 months of age. To reduce the risk of SIDS it is important to always place the babies on the back while they sleep.
