Transient Acantholytic Dermatosis aka Grover's Disease

Transient Acantholytic Dermatosis aka Grover's Disease

It is a rare, transient skin disorder in which there is formation of itchy, small, red, blistery lesions or rash mostly on the truncal area. The cause of this condition is unknown but some doctors have linked it to sweating, sun-damaged skin and excess heat exposure such as while using hot tubs and steam rooms.  The main characteristic of the skin lesions is that they show acantholysis on histopathology which is basically separation of the keratinocytes. As mentioned earlier, the chief clinical presentation is the appearance of the red rash and in some cases blisters or vesicles mainly on the skin of the chest and back. Apart from the fact that the skin lesions are usually pruritic, there are no other symptoms seen in Grover's Disease. Grover's disease has a duration that varies between several days to even decades or it may even be an on and off condition with a seasonal variation. It has no specific treatment but measures like keeping the skin cool and using moisturisers like lotions and mild topical steroids help to treat it and can even prevent it. Certain drugs like methotrexate and even antifungals like itroconazole have been proven to be of benefit in some cases.
