Extreme prematurity has always been a major cause of neonatal mortality and severe long-term morbidity. Artificial Placenta is a more physiologic approach in replacing placental function and providing a womb-like environment for premature babies. The work is still underway and several experiments on lambs have taken place. There is also potential to grow a placenta using human endometrial cells.
