Loa Loa filariasis or loiasis is an eye disease caused by loa loa, a nematode worm. It is transmitted through a deerfly vector and is most likely to occur during the rainy season. It is most common in West and Central Africa. When the larvae of these nematodes enter the bloodstream, they take few months to develop into adults and can migrate into the eye. Patients present with pain in the eye, itching, and light sensitivity. If this infection left untreated, it can cause damage to the kidneys, lungs, and heart. Worms that can be seen under the eye can easily be removed by surgery. Medical treatment is also available but the medicines which are used to treat this condition come with an increased risk of brain inflammation.
