Molluscum contagiosum is a self-limited viral infection caused by a pox virus. It is common in young sexually active adults and children. Transmission occurs via skin-to-skin contact (sexual contact can lead to genital involvement) and is highly contagious. It manifests as small papules with central umbilication. Lesions are mostly asymptomatic. It persists for up to 6 months but regresses spontaneously with time. Multiple treatment modalities are effective, like curettage, the use of drops containing podophyllin and cantharidin, and cryosurgery.
