Dialysis is a procedure employed to artificially filter blood when the kidneys are not working. It may be used in acute renal failure as well as end stage renal disease in chronic renal failure. There are two broad types- peritoneal and hemodialysis. In hemodialysis, a tunneled catheter or an arteriovenous fistula is used to circulate blood through a dialyzer machine which filters blood. The clean blood is then returned to the body. In peritoneal dialysis, the dialyzing fluid is entered into the peritoneal cavity in the abdomen and exchange of substances occurs through the peritoneal membrane.
