There are 3 waves and 2 decents in the JVP waveform: A wave: Right atrial contraction (Presystolic, absent in atrial fibrillation) X descent: Right atrial relaxation C wave: Bulging of the tricuspid valve into the right atrium (Beginning of systole, not seen clinically) V wave: Maximum venous return, atrial venous filling (Late systole, occurs at the same time as ventricular contraction) Y descent: Right ventricular filling (Diastole, tricuspid opens)
