How to Determine Severity of Pneumonia

To stratify the risk factors, a score is used in ER to determine the severity of pneumonia. This is referred to as ‘CURB-65’ which stands for: C = Confusion U = Blood Urea Nitrogen > 19 mg/dl R = Respiratory rate > 30 B = Blood Pressure; systolic BP < 90 mm Hg or diastolic BP < 60 mm Hg 65 = Age > 65 Each one of the above positive finding is considered +1. Score > +3 requires in-patient care.
