Pediculosis Pubis is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by Phthirus pubis. It can be transmitted through sexual contact, clothing or towels. The characteristic feature is severe pruritis in the genital region. Other hairy areas of the body can be involved as well. Diagnosis is made by examination of hair under microscope (or possibly with the naked eye)—identification of adult lice or nits. Treatment is done with 1% permethrin shampoo (applied to all hairy regions from neck down and wash off after several hours). Sexual partners should also be treated. Combs, clothes and bed linens should be washed thoroughly.
Scratching due to severe pruritis can lead to skin infections. Skin can become scarred and scaly
