Flat Foot

Flat Foot

Flat foot also known as pes planus is a deformity that affects the arch of the foot in which the arch is fallen that is there is loss of the medial longitudinal arch. The main presenting symptom of flat foot is pain in the foot that results due to strain on muscles and ligaments. Due to the altered weight bearing the calf, knee, hip and lower back are also predisposed to pain. Treatment is based on type and severity of flat foot with many cases being managed with physiotherapy exercise and foot orthosis while a few may require surgical intervention (such as rigid flat foot).
