CYSTICERCOSIS

CYSTICERCOSIS

Cysticercosis is a parasitic tissue infection caused by larval cysts of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium. These larval cysts infect brain, heart, muscles or other tissues of the body and are a major cause of adult onset seizures. It is asymptomatic for years and is acquired by consuming food and water contaminated by tapeworm eggs from human feces. Cardiac cysticercosis is extremely rare and typically asymptomatic form of Cysticercosis. The diagnosis is usually made by resolution of lesions following medical therapy with praziquantel or albendazole. On MRI, cardiac cysticercosis lesions appear hyperintense scolex in a cystic lesion. When a patient of cysticercosis presents with neurological symptoms, he/she should be evaluated for pulmonary and cardiac involvement in addition to all other body organs.
