A podiatrist, also called Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) and Chiropodist, are doctors of feet. They are physicians and surgeons who treat legs, ankles and feet. Similar to doctors of medicine, podiatrists also follow a similar studying, residency, training and fellowship protocol. They study for four years in a podiatric medical school followed by residency for three years. They receive certificates for practice from the relevant board. A podiatrist needs to excel in more exams to specialize in a particular area and become a foot specialist. A podiatrist’s job involves treating sports injuries to feet, diabetic foot, trauma, infections, wounds and other medical concerns of feet i.e. in-grown toenail, arthritis, flat feet, bunions, heel pains, heel spurs, warts, blisters, etc.
