Caput Medusae - A Clinical Sign

Caput Medusae - A Clinical Sign

As illustrated above, Caput Medusae is the appearance of a network of engorged and distended paraumbilical veins. They are a sign of an underlying condition and usually they're a cardinal feature of portal hypertension. Caput Medusae are painless and they may appear as bluish black from a distance. They may also be accompanied with other symptoms like ascites, edema of the legs and splenomegaly.
