What is the Frank Sterling Mechanism?
According to Frank Sterling mechanism, increase in venous return causes increase in end-diastolic volume i.e. ventricular filling and preload. Increased volumes exert pressure on cardiomyocytes. Continuous increase in venous return stretches the cardiomyocytes and hence the length of sarcomeres in cardiac muscles increases. Increase in sarcomere length causes greater ejection force, greater ejection fraction and greater stroke volume.
Force of contraction of mucsle is proportional to Intital length of muscle fibre
