Crew cut skull appearance in Thalassemia

Beta Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive disorder. The crew cut appearance of skull on X ray and hepatosplenomegaly are seen in this disorder due to extra-medullary hematopoiesis. Some other diagnostic features of Beta Thalassemia Major are evidence of severe red cell dysplasia, erythroblastosis, evidence that both parents have thalassemia minor,profound hypochromic anemia, absence or gross reduction of the amount of hemoglobin A and raised levels of hemoglobin F on Hb electrophoresis
