It is basically inflammation of the glomeruli which occurs after a strep infection of the throat or skin. To be more specific, the causative organism is group A streptococcus and it frequently occurs in children aged between 6-10 years. There's sudden onset of fever along with nausea, oliguria and hematuria (RBC casts in urine). As a result, the patient's urine has a cola-colored appearance. It can also cause hypertension in a previously normotensive patient. Sometimes the patient may also experience generalized edema and joint pain/stiffness. The basic lab findings are elevated anti-streptolysin O titers and decreased serum C3 levels. The aim of the treatment is to relieve the symptoms. Antibiotics, diuretics and a low sodium diet are effective for quick recovery.
